Thirtieth of December
By Ivan Ling
Thirtieth of December is the day my school friends organised a farewell dinner for all our teachers. After the day, friends parted ways. After the dinner, we embark on different paths and separate ways, some will move on to their university life, some will go to work, while selected few will spent three months in their National Service , or as we call it in our national tongue, Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (PLKN).
At 5.30p.m, I arrived at the venue. Personally, I am impressed by my friends who organised this dinner. When I enter the room, the organizers gave me an arm-band in exchange for my ticket. The venue is buzzing with excitement as friends from the 2009 Sungai Maong Science Stream chats with each other. "smiles!!" I turned in surprise only to find that my friends have their camera aimed at me. "click!" of the camera go, before I knew it, my face is all over facebook...
Our teachers arrived a bit later than I have expected... Anyway, the point is, they do arrive at the end. Dinner starts when the teachers are settled down and ready. The foods were served in a buffet style, although there are no refills, everyone seems to be contented by the foods.
Games are prepared after the dinner. The first game played was called The Boxes Of Horror. In this game, the contestants were asked to put their hands in boxes and try to guess what is in their boxes. The crowds explodes with laughter when one of my classmate exclaims "Dirty!!!" in hokkien when his hand touches the 'thing' in the box. After that, each teacher were ask to pick a student and make him or her do them a final favor (as you recall, this is our farewell dinner). I was quite shocked when my EST teacher asked me to dance with the Vice Principal of our school (well, quite lucky as I might say, no one has the chance except me...). After my 'performance' , my friends(who were chosen as well), tried their best to complete whatever weird missions given to them by their respective teacher. The missions ranged from singing and dancing(me!) to impersonating the Disciplinary Teachers, Phua Chu Kang(we have our own Phua Chu Kang in school!!), the Singaporean contractor and doing 'air-drumming'(kind of like playing drums without drums....just the sound effects)
After that, there is a slide show presentation from each class. The slides were so emotional, I can feel the tears swelling in my eyes. There are also musical performances by the 5Sc1 band and vocal mimicry of Jay Chou and other artists(I can't remember their names) by George of 5Sc2. Well, you can tell that he did a good job by the applauses that you hear.
Well, after that, the dinner is technically over. But for us, the party has just started. We started to take photos with teachers and ourself with weird poses.... (haha those photos are then uploaded into facebook)
Okay..... After the photo taking, the dinner is really over.....
